15 Minutes til 50 Patients
On Thursday, February 20th at 2:00pm NSPA Members had the pleasure of speaking with, Christoper Riccardi, CHSP, CHEP; Business Continutiy Manager at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC). Riccardi introduced the concept of "15 'til 50;" how hospital staff can recieve 50 or more patients within 15 minutes of notification of a mass casulaty incident (MCI).
This included the rapid deployment of staff, supplies, and equipment to succesfully activate and operate a mass casulaty incident triage and treatment area. The program utilizes the Hospital Incident Command System (HICS) and can be iniated using existing supplies and equipment. The application of the program provides the knowledge and tools to:
- Train emergency department staff, physicians and ancillary/support personnel to be ready to receive a surge of patients within 15 minutes of notification
- Determine the healthcare facility’s capacity and layout to set up all necessary supplies and equipment to manage 50 patients within 15 minutes
- Utilize the Hospital Incident Command System and strengthen communication between disaster patient care areas and the Hospital Command Center
- Aids with hospital accreditation, certification, and/or regulation standards
