Once a year the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR) requires all healthcare coalitions across the nation to examine and evaluate the ability of the coalition, and other stakeholders, to support medical surge. Placing stress on the health system is important for testing current response systems, identifying gaps in preparedness, and informing improvement planning. This exercise is designed to surge regional hospitals to 20% or greater of their current staffed bed capacity. Participating Hospitals may utilize this “surge” exercise to establish procedures, practices, and protocols to handle a surge of patients to their organization. Participating hospitals have been given the choice to choose where they are “surging” within their facility (I.e.: trauma, medical, infectious disease, pediatric, geriatric, etc.).
